The United States has committed $4.9 million (approximately F$11.1 million) to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This announcement was made by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin during a joint press conference at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi.

The funding is intended to bolster Fiji’s military modernization efforts through enhanced foreign military financing, pending approval from Congress. During a meeting with Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Secretary Austin and the Prime Minister discussed various security challenges facing the Pacific region.

Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of maritime security, noting that the first delivery of rigid inflatable boats to Fiji is expected in the coming months. Following that, a new boat ramp will be provided to aid in maritime enforcement within Fijian waters. He also mentioned the continued expansion of military exercises and engagements, including annual exercises and collaborations with the Nevada National Guard.

This significant investment indicates a stronger partnership between the US and Fiji, which may enhance regional security and stability in the Pacific. It reflects a commitment to supporting Fiji’s defense capabilities and responding to shared security interests.

In summary, this financial support not only aims to modernize the Fiji Military Forces but also strengthens the strategic relationship between the two nations. The enhancement of maritime security resources is especially hopeful, suggesting a proactive approach to protecting the Pacific waters.
