The United States has allocated $4.9 million (approximately F$11.1 million) to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This announcement was made by US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin during a joint press conference held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi.

The funding is intended to aid in the modernization of Fiji’s military through enhanced foreign military financing, subject to congressional approval. Austin emphasized that this new security assistance encompasses the $4.9 million in foreign military financing as part of a broader congressional program.

In a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka prior to the press conference, Austin addressed various security challenges faced in the Pacific region. He underscored the importance of maritime security, noting that the first delivery of rigid inflatable boats is expected to arrive within the coming months. Additionally, a new boat ramp is to be provided to assist in maritime control efforts within Fiji’s waters. Austin also mentioned plans for expanding joint exercises and engagements, including through the annual Pacific exercise and a continued partnership with the Nevada National Guard.

As a further note, calls to the RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai went unanswered.

This investment underlines the strengthening of military ties between the US and Fiji, fostering greater security collaboration in the Pacific, which is increasingly vital in today’s geopolitical climate.

In summary, the US’s commitment of $4.9 million represents a significant step towards enhancing Fiji’s military capabilities and reflects a robust partnership aimed at tackling regional security challenges. This collaboration not only enhances military readiness but also promotes stability and cooperation in the wider Pacific region.
