The United States has allocated $4.9 million (approximately $11.1 million Fijian) to support the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This announcement was made by US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin during a joint press conference held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi.

The funding is intended to aid in the modernization of Fiji’s military through enhanced foreign military financing, contingent on congressional approval. Secretary Austin highlighted the security assistance the US is committed to providing, including the $4.9 million foreign military financing and congressional programs.

During a bilateral meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, discussions focused on various security challenges facing the Pacific region. “Maritime security is essential, so I’m pleased that our first delivery of rigid inflatable boats will arrive in the next several months,” Austin stated. He also mentioned that a new boat ramp would soon be delivered to support maritime controls. The US plans to continue expanding joint exercises and engagements, including participation in annual exercises and collaboration with the Nevada National Guard.

The RFMF Commander, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, did not respond to calls seeking comment.

This significant military funding not only strengthens the partnership between the US and Fiji but also reflects a collaborative approach to addressing regional security concerns. The investment in maritime assets is a proactive step towards enhancing Fiji’s defense capabilities while promoting stability in the Pacific.

Overall, this funding can be seen as a hopeful investment in peace and security for the region, fostering stronger ties between the two nations and potentially benefiting the safety of the Pacific community as a whole.
