The United States has allocated $4.9 million (approximately F$11.1 million) to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) as part of an initiative to bolster Fiji’s military modernization efforts, contingent upon congressional approval. This announcement was made by US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin during a joint news conference held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Nadi.
During the conference, Austin highlighted the importance of maritime security and indicated that a collaborative effort is underway to address various security challenges in the Pacific region. He noted that the first delivery of rigid inflatable boats is expected in the coming months, alongside the construction of a new boat ramp to enhance Fiji’s maritime control capabilities. The partnership between the US and Fiji will also expand through joint exercises and ongoing cooperation with the Nevada National Guard.
Despite attempts to reach RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai for comment, phone calls went unanswered.
This funding signifies a strong commitment from the United States to enhance regional security and support Fiji’s military growth, paving the way for strengthened defense capabilities in the Pacific. As the world continues to grapple with security challenges, initiatives like this can foster greater stability and collaboration among nations.
In summary, this financial support not only aims to modernize Fiji’s military forces but also highlights the importance of international partnerships in ensuring maritime security in the Pacific region, offering a hopeful future for collaborative defense efforts.
