Urologists Clash Over Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s Treatment: What’s Next?

A specialist urologist has stated that former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical assessment can be carried out in Fiji. During the bail hearing, defense attorney Devanesh Sharma questioned Dr. Isireli Kaloucava, who expressed in his expert opinion that the CT scans with contrast and other required medical treatments that Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum is seeking in Singapore could be performed in Fiji.

Dr. Kaloucava, director of the Urology Centre in Suva, clarified that he has not examined the former A-G himself. His viewpoint differs from that of another specialist, Dr. Rajeev Patel, who suggested in a letter included in Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum’s affidavit that he should undergo a nuclear renal imaging scan, which is not available locally. This imaging will help determine the former A-G’s subsequent treatment steps.

Additionally, Sergeant Sunia Maniala, during cross-examination, asserted that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) possesses substantial evidence and witnesses against Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum, likely leading to a conviction and a potential custodial sentence. It was also disclosed that Sergeant Maniala’s affidavit was prepared with assistance from Assistant DPP Laisani Tabuakuro.

Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum communicated to the court that he is not looking to avoid the charges against him but needs to be in good health to address them properly. Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza is expected to announce her decision on Friday.
