The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a final notice to 14,661 tenants who have outstanding lease arrears, amounting to a substantial $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to settle their overdue payments promptly to prevent potential legal consequences.
Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services at TLTB, stressed the importance of resolving these arrears in a timely manner. He highlighted that making timely payments is essential for the Board to distribute funds to landowners without delays.
“We are eager to collaborate with our tenants in finding solutions,” Mr. Tuwai stated. “However, it is imperative that the arrears are cleared to avoid further legal action.” He also reminded tenants of their responsibility to pay lease rentals and administration fees in advance on the first day of January and July each year, as outlined in their lease agreements. This proactive measure will help prevent legal disputes and aid the Board in timely payments to landowners.
Mr. Tuwai encouraged tenants to reach out to TLTB’s arrears recovery teams if their lease falls under specific categories and mentioned that part payments could be arranged under certain conditions. Additionally, he advised tenants to seek financial assistance from commercial banks if needed, noting that TLTB has established prior arrangements to facilitate this process.
If tenants do not clear their outstanding payments by November 30, 2024, TLTB may be forced to disclose the names of those in arrears in media outlets. This could also lead to legal proceedings, potentially resulting in lease cancellations and the loss of property.
For any inquiries, tenants can contact TLTB at mobile number 990 8959.
In a hopeful note, TLTB’s commitment to working with tenants to resolve financial difficulties reflects a willingness to support the community. Prompt action can prevent legal actions and foster better relationships between tenants and landowners. Addressing these financial challenges with communication and assistance could lead to positive outcomes for all parties involved.
