Nadi Town Council’s special administrator, Prem Singh, remains optimistic that the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Shashi Kiran, will take prompt action to address the increasing number of street dwellers in the area. Singh emphasizes the importance of collaboration among governmental ministries, social welfare services, and religious organizations to effectively combat issues related to homelessness and loitering.
During a recent meeting with the Nadi Chamber of Commerce, Singh highlighted the necessity for ongoing monitoring and involvement of multiple government agencies, including those focused on land development, education, and the iTaukei community. He stated that a coordinated approach is critical in helping to mitigate challenges linked to street begging and overall social problems within Nadi.
Minister Kiran echoed Singh’s sentiments by acknowledging the crucial role of collaboration among various organizations, including charities and NGOs. She pointed out the complex cases that the local social welfare office frequently encounters, involving drug issues and family violence, which complicate efforts to support street dwellers. Kiran recounted a troubling incident where a man was found exploiting a partially blind child for begging, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to protect vulnerable individuals and discourage the use of children for begging.
Concerns have also been voiced by local business owners, like Ashfaaq Khan and Marc McElrath, who have reported disturbances caused by street dwellers affecting their businesses. They are advocating for a unified response from the authorities to ensure both the safety and cleanliness of their communities, reflecting the collective responsibility to address the needs of those in need while also protecting local enterprises.
The spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility among local stakeholders presents a hopeful outlook for Nadi. Continued dialogue and partnership are essential aspects in promoting effective solutions that can support both vulnerable populations and enhance the environment for local businesses. As the community works together to tackle these pressing social challenges, there is optimism for meaningful change, fostering a compassionate and supportive atmosphere for all residents.
