Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has raised alarm over the recent increase in fires at schools, calling it a national crisis that requires urgent action. He emphasized that the wellbeing of students and their right to uninterrupted education should be treated as absolute priorities.

Lal criticized the government for what he perceives as a preference for making excuses rather than taking concrete actions. He appealed to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Infrastructure to deploy teams of experts and auditors to conduct safety assessments in all schools across the nation. This nationwide audit, he suggested, should be executed alongside fire authorities to pinpoint schools and classrooms that are especially vulnerable and in need of immediate intervention.

He stressed the importance of creating a comprehensive plan to tackle fire hazards and ensure that educational institutions adhere to fundamental safety standards. Lal expressed his frustration at the ongoing situation saying, “Enough is enough.” He urged the government to go beyond mere statements and take tangible, accountable steps towards improving safety measures.

The impact of fires on educational institutions has already been severe, causing significant damage, disrupting the learning of many students, and endangering lives. Lal’s call to action is a plea for accountability, stressing that the lives of children and teachers are at stake and that continued governmental inaction could lead to another disaster.

He reiterated the need for the Coalition Government to recognize the seriousness of the current situation. Lal assured the people of Fiji that the Opposition is committed to prioritizing the safety of the youth, stating, “The time for excuses is over; it’s time for leadership.”

In a hopeful note, Lal’s insistence on safety audits and accountability highlights a commitment to proactive measures for protecting students, which could lead to safer educational environments in the future. The call for swift actions not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also encourages a culture of responsibility in safeguarding the futures of the next generations.
