Urgent Call to Action: Protecting Our Children from Abuse

The Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, revealed alarming statistics indicating that five out of six children in the community experience abuse. During her end-of-week statement in Parliament on Friday, she emphasized the urgent need for the nation to enhance its protective measures for children.

“Numerous studies show that many children who endure abuse may grow up to become abusers themselves,” Ms. Kiran noted. She highlighted a recent case involving a 13-year-old suspect, who was raped by her grandfather at the age of six, with the perpetrator still incarcerated.

She pointed out that if abused children are not rehabilitated and supported, they could perpetuate the cycle of abuse. “We already witness high rates of abuse in our community,” she stated.

Kiran expressed concern about the societal stigma surrounding victims, mentioning that while offenders may receive second chances, abused children suffer lifelong trauma. “It is incredibly difficult to counsel and rehabilitate infants who have experienced trauma from those meant to protect them. Unfortunately, victims are often blamed and ostracized by their own families and communities instead of being offered compassion and a healing environment,” she explained.

The Minister reiterated the profound and lasting impact of abuse on children. “We have a responsibility to address these issues thoroughly and develop protective mechanisms,” she declared.

Kiran called for a collective effort within the community to find solutions. She is collaborating with various stakeholders to raise awareness and establish protection programs, urging community organizations and agencies to come together for comprehensive, community-based strategies aimed at safeguarding children and reducing incidents of child sexual abuse.
