Recent reports indicate that about 72 percent of children in Fiji have faced some form of violence throughout their lives. This disturbing statistic encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, with a significant number of incidents occurring in environments that should provide safety and support, such as homes, schools, and communities.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, addressed these alarming figures in light of a recent viral video showcasing violence against very young children. She emphasized the pressing need for education and awareness regarding effective parenting techniques, particularly for younger parents who may lack support from extended family members.

To combat the issue of child violence, the Ministry is committed to enhancing educational initiatives about what constitutes violence against children and strategies to prevent it. Kiran stated, “Every child in Fiji has the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear or harm.”

The Ministry is also improving its Reporting Mechanisms and encourages the community to utilize the 24/7 child helpline (1325) for reporting abuse cases. They assure confidentiality and prompt action to safeguard victims and hold perpetrators accountable.

Moreover, Kiran announced expansions in counseling services and safe shelter provisions, alongside partnerships with NGOs to rehabilitate child victims and their families.

She urged the public to practice caution when sharing sensitive content online, asking that instead of circulating such distressing videos, individuals report incidents directly to authorities for swift action. Kiran called for a united effort among families, community leaders, educators, and citizens to foster a safer environment for children.

“Let us be their voice and their shield, ensuring their well-being and future. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and create a society where every child is protected, valued, and cherished,” Kiran stated, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding children.

This initiative reflects hope for a brighter future, showcasing a community rallying together to protect its future generations. By prioritizing education and support, Fiji is taking positive steps towards addressing and reducing violence against children.
