Fiji Labour Party (FLP) leader Mahendra Chaudhry has emphasized the importance of completing the truth and reconciliation process well ahead of the upcoming elections. During a meeting with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and political parties in Suva this week, Chaudhry stressed that the reconciliation must be genuine and uphold the fundamental principles of democracy and the rule of law.

He highlighted the necessity for transparency, independence, inclusivity, and credibility throughout the entire process, from the TRC’s appointment to the submission of its report to the President. Chaudhry pointed out that the TRC should focus on uncovering the truth behind the political upheavals and coups that occurred in 1987, 2000, and 2006, and ensure justice for the victims. “There cannot be genuine reconciliation without justice,” he stated.

Chaudhry remarked that the coups have significantly hindered Fiji’s development, contributing to a delay of about three decades and causing hardship for many families. He called for practical outcomes from the process that would create a sustainable pathway for improved race relations, fostering trust, understanding, and respect among all citizens.

Additionally, he urged that the draft Bill related to the reconciliation process be made accessible to all political parties and the public. Chaudhry attended the meeting alongside FLP vice-president Monica Raghwan and advisers Miriama Raiyawa and Satish Kumar.
