Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized the importance of completing the truth and reconciliation process well ahead of the upcoming elections. During a recent meeting with political parties in Suva, Chaudhry highlighted the need for true reconciliation that respects the fundamental principles of democracy and the rule of law.

He noted that the entire reconciliation effort, from the appointment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to the submission of its final report to the President, must be conducted in a transparent, independent, and credible manner. Chaudhry stressed that the TRC should focus on uncovering the truths behind the political turmoil and coups of 1987, 2000, and 2006 while ensuring justice for the victims.

“There cannot be genuine reconciliation without justice,” he stated. Chaudhry also pointed out that the coups have significantly impacted Fiji’s development, regressing the nation by nearly thirty years and resulting in hardship for many families.

He called for a practical outcome from the reconciliation process that would create a sustainable path toward improved race relations, fostering trust, understanding, and respect among all citizens. Additionally, Chaudhry urged for the draft Bill to be shared with all political parties and the public to ensure inclusivity in the process.

Accompanying him at the meeting were FLP vice-president Monica Raghwan and advisers Miriama Raiyawa and Satish Kumar.
