Parents and teachers at Naitasiri High School are urging the government to intervene and ensure the provision of safe and dependable transport for students. This plea comes in the wake of a serious accident that nearly resulted in the tragic loss of 18 students and two parents.

Semi Tamanivalu, a concerned parent whose child was involved in a similar incident last year, emphasized the need for government attention regarding safe transportation for children in the highland regions. He pointed out that this recent event marks the second accident with the same transport provider, which services six villages in the Naitasiri area.

According to Vatiri Dimoala Lutua, who was present during the accident, the experience left a lasting mark. She vividly recounted the traumatic scene, which involved injuries and students in distress as they were en route to what they anticipated would be a typical school day, especially since Year 11 students were preparing to complete their final exam. Lutua described the chaos, her struggle to assist injured students, and the haunting memories of the ordeal, mentioning that one student required hospitalization.

With a history of similar incidents, Lutua expressed her heartfelt hope that this would be the last time such an accident occurs. The community’s calls for action highlight an urgent need for the government to ensure the safety of students during their commutes.

In summary, this situation calls for immediate government action to provide safe transport solutions for students. By addressing these transportation safety concerns, the government has an opportunity to protect the lives of students and bring peace of mind to parents and teachers alike. It is a chance for positive change that can prevent such traumatic experiences in the future.
