Concerns about child safety have intensified following a recent incident where a toddler was found wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew addressed the matter, emphasizing that the welfare of children must be a priority to prevent potential tragedies.
The police discovered the young child after two women reported him to a nearby police station. Chew stated that the police are committed to investigating cases of child neglect thoroughly. Following the incident, a plea was made on the police’s official Facebook page for help in identifying the child’s parents or guardians, which led to a successful reunion after the post gained traction online.
Chew highlighted the seriousness of these incidents, noting that the police examine elements of negligence that could result in legal charges against guardians. He pointed out that this is not an isolated case, as there have been previous incidents involving neglect leading to injuries or fatalities, such as drowning or being struck by vehicles.
He called upon parents and caregivers to exercise greater vigilance, stressing the fleeting nature of supervision and its critical role in ensuring children’s safety.
In related remarks, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran underscored the importance of prioritizing children’s welfare. She referenced a tragic incident where a one-year-old boy lost his life after reportedly being hit by a vehicle while wandering onto the street unnoticed.
Kiran acknowledged that while many parents, particularly those in urban areas, may find it challenging to secure childcare, it is crucial to seek adequate support to prevent neglect and ensure children’s safety. She urged everyone to consider the importance of child protection to avert avoidable incidents.
