Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed serious concerns about the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Hailing from the area, Lal noted that this vital road has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by the road authorities. This change has led to a rise in accidents and an intolerable amount of dust that impacts both drivers and local residents.
Lal emphasized that the situation reflects a neglect of infrastructure and raises doubts about the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. “Savusavu is a lively tourism hub, drawing visitors worldwide eager to enjoy its unique beauty and charm. The airport is one of just two airstrips that facilitate air travel to the island. The condition of the road leading to this critical gateway is not only a local concern; it is of national significance,” he stated.
He added, “A smooth, safe, and dependable road is crucial to support our tourism sector, which plays a vital role in our economy and sustains many Fijian livelihoods.” Lal pointed out that the road’s transformation into gravel has detrimental effects, stating that the rise in accidents poses serious safety risks and the dust from vehicles presents a health hazard and annoyance to nearby residents.
“This is not just a minor inconvenience; it is a glaring failure to provide safe and reliable infrastructure, a fundamental responsibility of any government,” he remarked. Lal is demanding answers from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and questioned whether they lack the finances necessary for proper road maintenance.
He criticized the government for spending on extravagances, stating, “The funds used by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for a lavish dinner could have been better spent on resealing this crucial road, benefiting the community instead of indulging in fleeting luxuries.” Lal concluded by urging the government to address the issue promptly by allocating necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the road’s resealing, highlighting that this is not merely about fixing a road but also about restoring public trust in leadership and demonstrating commitment to the well-being of all Fijians.
