Independent Member of Parliament Ioane Naivalurua has emphasized that the fight against drugs demands a vigorous and immediate response rather than a bureaucratic approach.
During the debate on the 2024-2025 Budget, Naivalurua advocated for the creation of a Joint Select Committee for Parliamentary Oversight to evaluate and monitor the implementation and progress of the Coalition Government’s Counter Narcotics Strategy.
While he commended the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration for establishing a Narcotics Bureau, Naivalurua pointed out that, based on feedback from the community, the drug situation has escalated, with drugs being readily accessible on the streets. He questioned whether the government’s efforts are adequate to address the crisis.
He expressed concern that, despite the launch of the Counter Narcotics Strategy 2023, much of it remains unfunded within the various ministries involved. He raised several questions regarding the strategy:
1. Will these strategies effectively disrupt the flow and use of drugs?
2. Does this send a clear message to drug syndicates targeting our borders and people?
3. Does it foster a nationwide awareness that everyone must unite in this fight?
4. Will it restore Fiji to a safe and stable nation?
