Urban Migration Sparks Development Plans in Fiji

Approximately half of Fiji’s population now lives in urban areas, as noted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the launch of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu on Friday.

Mr. Rabuka acknowledged the significant change, stating that rural-to-urban migration is a common issue not only in Fiji but globally. He emphasized the importance of addressing this migration with a focus on enhancing the lives of the people, regardless of their location.

He raised crucial questions about retaining residents in rural areas and what measures can be implemented to support individuals in their chosen places of living.

The objective of the NaVualiku Fiji Tourism Development Program is to facilitate development in communities where people live. Mr. Rabuka highlighted that Fiji has a predominantly young population, with about half of its citizens under the age of 30. Additionally, he mentioned that 63 percent of the Northern Division’s population is in the productive age range of 15 to 64.

This demographic trend presents a significant opportunity to leverage the country’s natural resources and its workforce for development and growth.

At the center of this initiative is the vision of a more prosperous and resilient Fiji. The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to turning Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub that promotes economic growth, generates meaningful employment, and attracts investments from both local and international sources.

Mr. Rabuka stressed that the government is dedicated to developing a comprehensive strategy aimed at uplifting the economy and improving the lives of the Fijian people for a brighter future.
