Upholding Justice: A President’s Call to the Judiciary

Outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has emphasized the importance of integrity and dignity among magistrates and judges. Speaking at a workshop dinner in Nadi last week, he reminded judicial officers of their crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring access to justice for all citizens in a profession reliant on legal standards.

He stated, “Impartiality, fairness, and efficiency of the judiciary are the cornerstones of a democratic society.” He urged the officers to be conscious of their judgments, highlighting the need for transparent decision-making.

Katonivere stressed that maintaining checks and balances is vital to uphold the rule of law and to protect the values of a fair and just judicial system. He noted the significance of training in enhancing the standards of judicial officers both individually and collectively as an organization.

He acknowledged the diverse expertise within the judicial community and encouraged professionals to learn from one another, sharing insights and applying them with the integrity synonymous with their profession.
