Outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has encouraged magistrates and judges to adhere to the principles of integrity and dignity. He delivered this message during a workshop dinner for judicial officers in Nadi last week.

Katonivere reminded attendees that, as members of a profession grounded in law, they have a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is accessible to all citizens.

He emphasized that “impartiality, fairness, and efficiency of the judiciary are, as you are all aware, the cornerstone of a democratic society.” The president urged judicial officials to consider the impact of their decisions and strive for transparency in their decision-making processes.

He stressed the importance of maintaining checks and balances to ensure compliance with the rule of law and to uphold the principles of a fair and just judicial system.

Katonivere noted that ongoing training is essential for enhancing the standards of judicial officers, both individually and collectively. He expressed appreciation for the diverse expertise present at the gathering and encouraged members of the judiciary to learn from one another, share experiences, and apply their knowledge while upholding the integrity of their profession.
