Unveiling Suva’s Tropical Fantasy: The Hibiscus Carnival of ’92

The Hibiscus Carnival of 1992 introduced a tropical fantasy theme to Suva City. As reported, the excitement in Suva was palpable as the festivities commenced at Albert Park on Saturday. The week-long event promised a dynamic schedule of cultural showcases, including dedicated nights for Indian, Fijian, and Polynesian traditions, in addition to a captivating Chinese dragon dance.

A notable highlight was the designated Senior Citizens Day. Central to the carnival was the eagerly awaited Hibiscus Carnival Fashion Show, themed “Tropical Fantasy.” Organiser Anna Sweetman indicated that guests could anticipate an evening filled with surprises and various prizes.

“We are providing a wonderful evening themed ‘Tropical Fantasy,’ so be sure to join us for the experience,” Sweetman noted. “The night is set to be one of surprises and prizes.”

The fashion show, sponsored by Air New Zealand, was scheduled to be held at Scandals, Noble House, Bau St, Suva, starting at 6:30 PM. Tickets were available for $12, which included complimentary savory snacks, raffles, and door prizes. The event also involved music and dancing with Ken Janson and The Hearts.

Fashion showcases included tropical outfits by Tanya Whiteside, Expozay swimwear, and men’s suits by Rags and Riches. With a combination of dazzling fashion and vibrant entertainment, the Hibiscus Carnival was poised to be a memorable celebration of Suva’s rich cultural tapestry.
