Unveiling Fiji’s Ongoing Battle: The Drug Peddler Dilemma

Authorities in Fiji continue to grapple with the persistent issue of drug peddling on the streets. Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua recently addressed the topic, highlighting the challenges faced by the Government and police, who have been criticized for conducting only raids.

Minister Tikoduadua explained that while they apprehend wrongdoers, including drug peddlers, these individuals operate like “worker ants” and are not the masterminds behind the operations. He emphasized that drug peddlers are driven by various motivations, often related to basic survival needs, making it difficult to eliminate them from the streets.

He pointed out that public perception sometimes quickly places blame without understanding the underlying reasons. However, Tikoduadua stated that repeat offenders who refuse to reform or rehabilitate should face the full extent of the law due to their harmful actions.

The minister mentioned that the new counter-narcotics strategy would address the issue of drug peddling more comprehensively and look into stricter measures for persistent offenders.

Despite the complexities, Tikoduadua expressed confidence in the ability of law enforcement and the Fijian people to outsmart and ultimately curb drug peddling. He described the distinction between peddlers and the responsible members of the community, emphasizing that many Fijians are mature and responsible citizens.

In conclusion, Tikoduadua reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stopping drug peddlers and preventing them from finding ways to continue their activities, highlighting the intelligence and accountability of the Fijian populace in combating this issue.
