Unveiling Fiji’s Drug Crisis: Urgent Solutions Needed

Fiji must address the drug crisis gripping the nation, according to Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu. Speaking in Parliament, Seruiratu expressed grave concern over the rampant drug use and trafficking in the country, describing the situation as alarming. He highlighted the severe impact of drug abuse on public health, safety, the economy, and the overall well-being of society.

Seruiratu stressed that youths are the most vulnerable group to drug use and called for immediate action to tackle the problem. While acknowledging the government’s efforts through the Counter Narcotics Strategy 2023-2028, the establishment of the Narcotics Bureau, and drug rehabilitation facilities, he emphasized the need for community-level support to reinforce these initiatives.

He urged the development of educational and awareness programs within community networks to deliver consistent messages about the dangers of drug abuse. He cited a recent incident involving a 14-year-old who was hospitalized due to drug abuse as a stark reminder of the crisis at hand.

“The government must act now,” Seruiratu urged.
