The Nasinu Town Council is currently undergoing an investigation into its financial practices, driven by concerns of significant mismanagement linked to previous administrations. Felix Magnus, the council’s executive chairman, announced that a forensic audit will scrutinize financial records from the years 2018 to 2020.

Magnus highlighted that millions of dollars appear to be missing, which has severely affected essential services within the municipality. “Our objective is to finally secure an unqualified opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that,” he stated. Any evidence of financial misconduct will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

The audit, which is being facilitated by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Local Government, will concentrate on various areas including cash controls, payroll processes, asset management, oversight of projects, and compliance with regulations. The council has committed to ensuring that residents are kept informed about the findings of the audit.

Magnus emphasized the importance of accountability, asserting, “We owe it to our community to clean up this mess and to ensure the mistakes of the past are never repeated.” The decision to launch this investigation follows red flags raised in reports by the Auditor General regarding potential misuse of council funds.

This proactive approach to address past financial discrepancies indicates a commitment to improving transparency and governance within local administration. The council’s dedication to informing and involving the community in the process demonstrates a hopeful path toward financial health and restoration of trust in local government.

In summary, the Nasinu Town Council is taking significant steps to address and rectify past financial mismanagement issues, bringing a sense of hope for improved accountability and community service in the future.
