Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his concerns regarding the hospitalization of seven individuals from a well-known resort on the Coral Coast over the past weekend, stating that the government is managing the situation as effectively as possible. Testing samples have been collected by the relevant authorities.

This statement follows the Warwick Resort Fiji’s declaration that the incident involving their guests experiencing illness was unprecedented. Management expressed deep concern over media reports indicating that the guests became unwell after allegedly consuming piña coladas at the resort.

The Warwick Resort, a long-standing business in Fiji for nearly 40 years, emphasized its commitment to guest safety. The management reassured the public, stating, “We take the safety of our guests very seriously,” and highlighted their collaborative efforts with authorities to understand the cause of this unfortunate situation. The resort is dedicated to maintaining high standards of food and beverage safety and committed to supporting their guests throughout the ongoing investigation.

For guests or visitors with specific inquiries, the resort’s management encourages communication, assuring that staff is ready to address any concerns regarding guests’ stays.

As the investigation continues, responses from the police, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Health regarding the situation remain pending. Meanwhile, Australia’s travel advisory service has maintained its guidance for visitors to Fiji, recommending that travelers exercise normal safety precautions and remain vigilant about potential risks such as drink spiking and methanol poisoning.

A toxicology report from the Fiji Police Force is expected to be released soon, providing further insights into the case. Currently, five of the seven affected individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while two continue to receive care; one patient has transitioned from the ICU to a regular ward for observation.

In a challenging time for the affected guests and the resort, the commitment of the health authorities and the resort management to address the issue and ensure guest safety is commendable. It highlights the importance of swift action in maintaining public trust and safety in tourism.

This situation serves as a reminder for both travelers and establishments in the hospitality industry to prioritize health and safety measures, ensuring that such incidents are effectively addressed and prevented in the future.
