Unlocking Trade Potential: Fiji’s Role in PACER Plus

Members of the Fiji New Zealand Business Council (FNZBC) have been encouraged to engage with the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER) Plus as nationwide consultations are underway. David Dewar, New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Fiji, emphasized that this initiative provides a valuable opportunity for businesses to collaborate and enhance trade efforts.

Dewar highlighted the importance of the business community recognizing the potential benefits of including Fiji in what he describes as “the only significant trade agreement that encompasses the entire region.” While governments may lead negotiations, Dewar pointed out that these discussions fundamentally serve the interests of businesses and consumers involved in trade.

“Trade is not solely a government activity; it is driven by businesses,” Dewar stated during a cocktail event for FNZBC members on Wednesday. He urged businesses to engage thoughtfully with the agreement, aligning their interests with the broader national goals to make a substantial impact.

He stressed that businesses could provide valuable insights and raise awareness during negotiations, ensuring that decisions not only benefit bilateral trade between New Zealand and Fiji but also allow Fiji to shape its economic policies effectively. Furthermore, this approach empowers businesses to hold governments accountable across the region, including their own and that of New Zealand.

Dewar underscored the significant potential that a trade agreement like PACER Plus can unlock. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs and Communications is facilitating consultations for businesses, stakeholders, and the private sector to reassess their positions regarding PACER Plus.

PACER Plus is a regional trade agreement negotiated by Australia, New Zealand, and several Pacific island nations, aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by Pacific island economies while providing a framework for enhanced trade and economic cooperation.
