Unlocking the Power of Diplomacy: Insights from Fiji’s British High Commissioner

British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones, emphasized the importance of making others feel valued in the realm of diplomacy. Speaking to 16 graduates of the Basic Diplomacy Training program in Suva, Dr. Jones acknowledged their eight-month commitment, which included sacrifices of personal weekends for their development.

He highlighted that diplomacy should be practiced in all aspects of life. “Whether negotiating at a table, conducting an interview, teaching in a classroom, or interacting in healthcare settings, maintaining a diplomatic attitude is essential,” he said. The aim is to leave a positive impression on others, ultimately contributing to success in any career.

Dr. Jones also shared insights from his own experience as a diplomat, representing King Charles in a foreign country. He noted the significance of every interaction, whether it’s with a security guard or a government official, as these relationships could be vital in the future.

He concluded by stating that success is not solely determined by academic achievements or intellectual capabilities, but rather by a commitment to personal improvement and serving as a role model, whether in government, politics, business, international relations, or efforts to strengthen one’s own nation.
