The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) are initiating several digital transformation projects aimed at demonstrating a comprehensive societal approach to digitalization in the future.

One of the key initiatives focuses on digital identity, where the organizations are developing interoperable systems for civil registration and health records, among other areas. Munkhtuya Altangerel, the Resident Representative of the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji, emphasized that these systems will provide inclusive access to public services and social protection, ensuring that no one is excluded in the evolving digital landscape.

Another focal point is on digital upskilling, with customized digital training programs designed for civil servants, regulators, and civil society organizations. These initiatives aim to cultivate a digitally empowered and responsive public sector. Ms. Altangerel highlighted that “digital public goods” are being deployed through open-source platforms to improve government efficiency and transparency, ultimately enhancing public service delivery and reinforcing democratic institutions. She made these remarks while speaking to key stakeholders in the financial sector at the RBF Financial Inclusion Award event in Suva last week.

Additionally, efforts are being made to leverage infrastructure investments. Ms. Altangerel noted partnerships with international financial institutions to create solutions centered on people, focusing on enhancing connectivity investments.

Furthermore, the UNDP is addressing emerging priorities by continuously monitoring for new digital divides and challenges, which include advancements in responsible artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and combating misinformation and disinformation.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to viewing citizens not just as customers of digital services but as active participants in shaping their digital future,” Ms. Altangerel stated.
