The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) are actively pursuing multiple digital transformation projects aimed at exemplifying a comprehensive digital approach for society’s future.

One of the key initiatives is focused on digital identity, where the organizations are developing interoperable systems for civil registration, health records, and other services. Munkhtuya Altangerel, the Resident Representative of the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji, emphasized that these systems will provide inclusive access to public services and social protection, ensuring that no one is overlooked in the digital age.

In addition, the UN agencies are implementing digital upskilling programs tailored for civil servants, regulators, and civil society organizations. These programs are intended to create a digitally empowered and responsive public sector.

“Digital public goods are being deployed through open-source platforms that enhance government efficiency and transparency. This initiative not only improves public service delivery but also strengthens democratic institutions,” stated Ms. Altangerel during her address to key stakeholders in the financial industry at the RBF Financial Inclusion Award event in Suva last week.

Another important initiative involves leveraging infrastructure investments, where they are collaborating with international financial institutions to design solutions centered around people that utilize connectivity investments. Furthermore, Ms. Altangerel mentioned that they are proactive in identifying emerging priorities and are consistently assessing potential digital divides and challenges. This includes initiatives focusing on responsible artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and combating misinformation.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to viewing citizens not merely as customers of digital services but as active participants in shaping their digital future,” she concluded.
