The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be a key focus at the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18.
Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, noting issues like saltwater intrusion that are affecting both coastal and inland areas.
This four-day event aims to gather farmers, agricultural specialists, industry leaders, and the general public to address these pressing challenges. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and discussions on the latest in climate-smart agricultural practices.
Rayalu indicated that side events will be available for public participation, where experts will lead discussions on various topics, including soil health and smart farming techniques. He emphasized the need to adopt climate-smart practices, particularly by focusing on traditional crop varieties that have proven resilient over time.
The National Agriculture Show will also highlight new livestock breeds and address issues related to animal health and production. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other advanced livestock practices, along with chances for farmers to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.
Additionally, a “Farmers’ Village” will allow local farmers to present their produce and value-added products, complemented by interactive exhibits and educational activities catering to all ages.
Rayalu encouraged farmers, students, and the public to participate in the Agriculture Show 2024, emphasizing the event’s focus on celebrating innovations that are vital for a sustainable and productive agricultural future.
