The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the focal point of the 2024 National Agriculture Show, taking place from October 15 to 18.
With the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu stressed the visible impacts of climate change on Fiji’s agriculture, citing issues such as saltwater intrusion which has permeated not only coastal areas but also extended up river systems.
The four-day event is anticipated to attract farmers, agricultural specialists, industry leaders, and the general public to engage in discussions about these challenges. Attendees will have the chance to learn about the latest advancements in climate-smart practices through hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and expert-led discussions.
Rayalu mentioned that there will be side events where the public can join in practical sessions and discussions led by experts covering topics from soil health to modern farming techniques. He highlighted the significance of embracing climate-smart methods by emphasizing the cultivation of traditional crops that have demonstrated resilience through the years.
“Rather than developing an abundance of hybrid varieties, our focus will be on propagating the traditional varieties that have proven their durability over time,” Rayalu noted.
In addition to crops, the National Agriculture Show will also introduce new livestock breeds and highlight advancements in animal health and production techniques. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other innovative livestock management practices. Farmers will have a platform to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.
The event will feature a “Farmers’ Village,” showcasing local farmers’ produce and value-added products, along with interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.
“I encourage farmers, students, and the wider community to participate in the Agriculture Show 2024 as we celebrate the innovations that are reforming the future of agriculture and strive for a more sustainable and productive industry,” Rayalu added.
