The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has launched an off-season athletics training camp aimed at providing student athletes from smaller schools the opportunity to train effectively during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou emphasized the dire need for structured training, as many talented students are left without adequate preparation outside of regular school competitions.
Speaking about the initiative, Tafao’ou shared, “It’s sad to see the kids faint or get injured during competitions due to being unfit.” This observation prompted him to propose an off-season camp, which gained approval from FSC management. The camp currently charges $20 per week, and response has been positive, attracting about 35 students in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The program, which runs for six weeks and will conclude on January 24, focuses primarily on teaching foundational athletic skills and techniques, including block starts and endurance training. Experienced coaches, such as former athletes Albert Miler and Banuve Tabakaucoro, are assisting with specific disciplines, including high jumps and sprints.
Tafao’ou noted the importance of instilling discipline and time management in these young athletes, as parents have reported positive changes in their children’s routines. With interhouse competitions starting in February, Tafao’ou encouraged more students to join the camp to enhance their fitness and skills.
“This initiative is crucial for athletes who have not previously competed,” he said, underscoring the camp’s goal to make high-quality training accessible to all students, regardless of their school’s resources.
The program aims not only to prepare athletes for imminent competitions but also to inspire them to cultivate a love for sport through structured training. This inclusive approach represents a significant step toward elevating athletics in Fiji and ensuring that talented young individuals have the support they need to thrive in their athletic journeys.
In conclusion, this athletics camp serves as a beacon of hope for the future of sports in Fiji, focusing on skill development, discipline, and community involvement. As these young athletes commit to their training, the potential for future success on both national and international stages becomes increasingly promising.
