Unlocking Strength: Fiji National University’s New Martial Arts Program

Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and ex-head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has been appointed as the program instructor for the newly launched Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located on the Nasinu Campus.

The Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines. Training includes Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The program encourages a holistic approach to martial arts, promoting physical fitness, mental strength, spiritual growth, and self-defense skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, who serves as the Chief Guest and a Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts is more than just physical practice; it represents a journey of personal transformation. He highlighted the program’s ability to offer new opportunities for self-discipline and personal growth, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds and abilities.

Lingam expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and supportive environment for students to learn at their own pace while fostering mutual respect and growth among participants. He noted that the program will teach valuable life lessons alongside technical skills, helping participants develop resilience and a mindset focused on self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean Learning and Teacher at CHE, remarked that the initiative is a significant step in the university’s commitment to offering diverse educational opportunities. He encouraged students to enroll in the short course, which will provide a detailed grounding in various martial arts techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education at CHE, affirmed the relevance of martial arts in addressing today’s complex societal challenges, emphasizing that the skills and values taught are more essential than ever.

This six-week certificate program is designed to empower participants with comprehensive martial arts knowledge and skills, enhancing their physical fitness, self-defense capabilities, and overall well-being. Singh concluded by stating that martial arts teaches individuals to manage difficult situations with composure and humility.
