Unlocking Resilience: Join Fiji’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Revolution at 2024 National Show!

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the central focus at the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled from October 15 to 18.

Under the theme ‘Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,’ Minister Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the current impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, citing issues like saltwater intrusion affecting inland areas.

The four-day event is designed to bring together farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the public to address these pressing challenges. Participants will engage in hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and expert discussions to explore the latest advancements in climate-smart agriculture.

Rayalu announced plans for side events where the public can join hands-on sessions and discussions led by experts on various topics, including soil health and smart farming techniques. He underscored the significance of promoting traditional crops, which have demonstrated resilience over time, instead of relying solely on hybrids.

The National Agriculture Show will also highlight new livestock breeds and provide insights into animal health and production methods. Visitors can look forward to demonstrations of biogas production and other innovative livestock practices, along with opportunities for farmers to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.

Additionally, a “Farmers’ Village” will be set up where local farmers can showcase their produce and value-added products. The event will feature interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.

Rayalu encouraged farmers, schoolchildren, and the general public to attend the Agriculture Show 2024, celebrating the innovations that are shaping the future of the agricultural sector and promoting a more sustainable and productive industry.
