Unlocking Progress in the Pacific: Academic Research & Media Insights

Academic research is pivotal to the progress of the Pacific region, especially in addressing the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and social media, according to Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad.

Speaking at the book launch of “Waves of Change: Media, Peace and Development in the Pacific” during the 2024 Pacific International Media Conference in Suva on Thursday, Prof Prasad emphasized the importance of data in finding solutions to various issues, particularly in the Pacific.

Prof Prasad co-edited the book with University of the South Pacific (USP) Head of Journalism Dr. Shailendra Singh and former USP lecturer Dr. Amrit Sarwal.

He noted that the book offers a rich combination of research, analysis, and experiential knowledge to discuss development and progress throughout the Pacific region.

“Our contributions reflect on peace, stability, and democracy challenges in the region,” Prof Prasad stated.

“Our vision as co-editors of Waves of Change was to gather thought leaders to contemplate some of the foundational challenges our region faces.”

“This book is our humble contribution, and I am pleased that it has been positively received and sparked many discussions.”

“I urge our development partners to collaborate with our institutions and support Pacific Islanders in sharing our stories and perspectives — not narrating our stories from an external viewpoint. That practice is detrimental to us.”

Additionally, the 30th volume of the Pacific Journalism Review, co-edited by USP Journalism Program founder Professor David Robie, was also launched that evening.

Prof Prasad extended his warm congratulations to Prof Robie, describing his achievements as a “remarkable milestone.”

The conference, the first of its kind in 20 years, brings together high-profile, international award-winning journalists and journalism academics from 11 countries in the region, including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The event serves as a platform to address the pressing challenges and issues faced by Pacific media.
