The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has initiated an off-season athletics training camp aimed at benefiting young athletes, particularly those from smaller or less privileged schools. This program is designed to address the lack of structured training that often leads to injuries and poor performance during competition.
National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou has observed firsthand the struggles many of these talented athletes face, noting worrisome incidents during athletics events where students fainted due to inadequate fitness. In response, Tafao’ou proposed this camp, which was approved by FSC management, to provide these athletes with the coaching they need. The camp, which charges a nominal fee of $20 per week, began three weeks before Christmas and will run until January 24, just ahead of the upcoming inter-house competitions slated for February.
Approximately 35 students have participated so far, receiving guidance from experienced former athletes like Albert Miler and Banuve Tabakaucoro, who specialize in various disciplines including high jumps and sprints. The training focuses on essential skills such as block starts and endurance running, while also instilling important life skills like discipline and time management.
Parents have reported positive changes in their children, with many now adhering to structured training schedules and displaying increased enthusiasm about the inter-house events. Tafao’ou has emphasized the camp’s inclusive nature, aiming to provide opportunities for all students, regardless of their background. This initiative not only prepares participants for upcoming competitions but also helps them build confidence by leveling the playing field against more established competitors.
With two and a half weeks still remaining in the camp, Tafao’ou encourages more young athletes to join, underscoring the significant potential for growth that structured training can provide. This proactive approach taken by the FSC is pivotal in nurturing the future of athletics in Fiji, as it fosters an environment where aspiring athletes can thrive, ultimately benefiting the nation’s sports landscape.
In summary, the FSC off-season athletics training camp serves as a crucial platform for young athletes in Fiji, focusing on skill development, discipline, and community engagement, and fostering a hopeful outlook for the future of sports in the region.
