Unlocking Pacific Health: The Role of Traditional Healers

Traditional healers have been integral to maintaining the health of our communities, stated Health Ministry acting Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Luisa Cikamatana. She made these remarks at a symposium held last week that focused on enhancing the health sector in the Pacific region.

“Their knowledge of herbal remedies, spiritual healing, and holistic health approaches continues to provide valuable insights and modern health practices,” Dr. Cikamatana said. “The challenges we face in the Pacific region – including non-communicable diseases and the impacts of climate change – necessitate inventive and alternative solutions.”

She highlighted that the journey of health professionals started with extensive knowledge derived from centuries of traditional practices and wisdom. Dr. Cikamatana added that the Pacific Islands have a long history of health practices rooted in natural medicine, community-based care, and profound respect for the environment.
