Inclusion is more than a mere buzzword; it serves as the cornerstone of a fair and resilient society. This critical theme was examined at the 2024 Top Executive Conference (TOPEX2024) during a session titled “Beyond Tokenism: Building a Truly Inclusive and Impactful Business.”

Lemeki Cagialau, the Executive Director of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, alongside other speakers, highlighted the significance of fostering meaningful inclusivity in both business and society. Mr. Cagialau noted Fiji’s advancements in inclusion for people with disabilities, especially following the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the establishment of supportive legislation. However, he urged that policy reforms are still crucial for ensuring full participation of individuals with disabilities in all societal aspects.

Policy reforms are essential for creating a genuinely inclusive society. They serve as a framework that empowers individuals with disabilities, tackles systemic barriers, and promotes equity and accessibility. Several key areas are identified where reforms can significantly drive impact:

1. **Promoting Equal Rights and Opportunities:** Policies that secure equal rights and prevent discrimination are vital to creating a level playing field for individuals with disabilities.

2. **Enhancing Accessibility:** All infrastructure, technology, and public spaces should be accessible to ensure full participation of individuals with disabilities in social and economic activities.

3. **Inclusive Education:** Policies that facilitate access to quality education can unlock potential and open pathways to independence and employment for individuals with disabilities.

4. **Economic Empowerment:** Programs aimed at creating job opportunities and encouraging entrepreneurship among individuals with disabilities contribute to financial autonomy and bolster national economic growth.

5. **Improving Healthcare Services:** Accessible and specialized healthcare services that cater to the unique needs of individuals with disabilities enhance their overall quality of life.

6. **Strengthening Social Protection:** Sufficient social safety nets can mitigate vulnerability and provide a stable foundation for individuals with disabilities.

7. **Combating Stigma and Discrimination:** Awareness campaigns and inclusive policies can help shift societal attitudes towards greater acceptance and acknowledgment.

8. **Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals:** Inclusive policies support global SDGs, ensuring that no one is left behind in the quest for a better future.

9. **Fostering Community Participation:** Encouraging individuals with disabilities to engage in community decision-making enhances the representation of their voices and perspectives.

The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) expressed pride in supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity. Cagialau’s presentation resonated with participants, motivating the private sector to embrace inclusive practices and collaborate with organizations like the National Council of Persons with Disabilities. In honor of this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, FCEF reaffirmed its commitment by donating $5,000 to the Council, underscoring its dedication to building a more inclusive society.

Cagialau emphasized that inclusion transcends mere accessibility; it is about creating empowerment opportunities. Businesses are encouraged to move beyond superficial gestures and implement strategies that recognize individuals with disabilities as valuable contributors to society and the economy.

FCEF remains committed to championing inclusivity and calls on other businesses to adopt similar practices. The Federation actively involves individuals with disabilities in its councils, ensuring their participation in meetings, training sessions, and various opportunities. Through fostering meaningful participation, FCEF exemplifies that inclusivity is not just a principle but a practice that promotes equitable and sustainable progress.

This in-depth discussion at TOPEX2024 reflects a growing awareness of the importance of inclusion in fostering social and economic resilience. By working together and committing to real change, Fiji can build a future that embraces diversity and empowers all its citizens.
