Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has once again urged parents and guardians to appropriately utilize the $200 government assistance intended for their children’s back-to-school preparations as the 2025 academic year approaches. Addressing attendees during the launch of the new Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS) online application system in Suva, Radrodro stressed that this financial support should be dedicated solely to educational expenses such as uniforms, books, and stationery.
“The $200 is to provide assistance for parents and guardians in terms of preparing their children to start with their 2025 academic journey,” Radrodro stated, urging families to adhere to the intended purpose of the funds. Echoing his remarks, Finance Minister Biman Prasad emphasized the significance of responsible spending, reminding parents about the government’s goal to alleviate the financial burdens many families face due to rising living costs and the economic impacts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
This initiative aims to particularly assist households with an annual income below $50,000, a demographic historically supported by the government, which extends to approximately 200,000 students each year at an estimated cost of $130 million. The timing of this support is crucial, especially following the festive season when families must prepare for school.
Government officials are optimistic that this financial aid not only eases immediate financial pressures on families but also fosters a learning environment where children can return to school prepared and eager to succeed academically. This proactive approach reflects the government’s commitment to educational investment, paving the way for improved opportunities for students and families alike.
In summary, the rollout of this assistance is a significant effort to support educational readiness, offering a hopeful outlook for families and reinforcing the importance of focused financial resources in building a brighter future for children across Fiji.
