Mere Rasue, a 34-year-old artist from Ra with roots in Somosomo Village, Gau, has embarked on a remarkable journey of self-discovery and creativity. Her life story showcases both challenges and triumphs, reflecting her deep belief that talent is a divine gift.
Raised in Lautoka by parents dedicated to public service—her father at the magistrate court and her mother a teacher—Mere’s formative years were shaped by strong values. However, after marrying young and starting a family with three children in Ba, she found herself questioning her future as she faced various hardships.
A turning point came through her older brother, who encouraged her to look beyond her current circumstances. He urged her to apply to a visual arts program at the University of the South Pacific, though she initially knew little about the field. Despite this, she sketched several pieces and applied, eventually being selected as one of only three out of 30 applicants.
Mere’s introduction to visual arts opened her eyes to new media, such as acrylic paints and canvas, vastly different from her previous experiences with pencil and ink. This newfound passion blossomed through workshops and exhibitions, further igniting her creativity. A pivotal moment occurred when she met Anare Somumu, a prominent artist, at an art exhibition, who subsequently broadened her network within the art community.
Since then, Mere has become deeply involved in Fiji’s vibrant art scene, showcasing her work alongside other local artists. Emphasizing the cultural significance of her art, she aims to educate younger generations about their heritage and inspire them not to neglect their education. With her oldest daughter now aspiring to be an artist herself, Mere is determined to ensure her children balance academic pursuits with artistic expression.
Looking ahead, Mere is eager to continue honing her skills and dreams of becoming a children’s book illustrator. Her journey exemplifies the transformative power of art and education, highlighting that it’s never too late to pursue one’s passion.
In summary, Mere Rasue’s story is a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of creativity. Her dedication to both her art and her family’s future serves as an inspiration to others facing challenges, reminding everyone to embrace their talents and share their gifts with the world.
