Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, is now the program instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Program at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities located at the Nasinu Campus.
This recently launched Certificate Program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills across various martial arts disciplines. The curriculum includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The program promotes a holistic approach to martial arts training, allowing participants to improve their physical fitness, mental well-being, spiritual health, and self-defence skills.
During the launch, Professor Govinda Lingam, Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extend beyond mere physical exercise, serving as a pathway for personal growth. He remarked, “We are not just launching a program but opening doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth. Martial arts is inclusive; it welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds, and physical abilities.”
Professor Lingam expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a secure and encouraging learning environment, enabling students to learn at their own pace and to thrive within a culture of mutual respect and growth. He added that the program not only teaches essential technical skills but also imparts valuable life lessons necessary for facing life’s adversities and fostering a mindset of continuous self-improvement.
Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching at the College of Humanities and Education, highlighted this initiative as a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to offering diverse educational opportunities aligned with students’ interests. He stated, “This short course will provide students with a thorough understanding of various martial arts techniques, led by our experienced instructors who will ensure proper training to build necessary skills and confidence.”
Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, noted the increasing relevance of martial arts skills and values in today’s complex societal challenges. He explained, “This six-week short course is designed to give participants both understanding and practical proficiency in various martial arts, enhancing their physical fitness, self-defence, and overall well-being.”
