Fiji National University’s College of Humanities and Education has introduced an Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Nasinu Campus.

The Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in various Martial Arts disciplines. The courses include Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, promoting a comprehensive approach to Martial Arts training. The goal is to improve participants’ physical fitness, mental strength, spiritual growth, and self-defence skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, a key speaker at the launch and Professor in Teacher Education, stated that Martial Arts extends beyond physical activity; it represents a path to personal development. He emphasized that the programme is designed to offer opportunities for self-discipline, fitness, resilience, and personal advancement, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Professor Lingam expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would create a safe and supportive environment, allowing each student to learn at their own pace while promoting mutual respect and growth within the Fiji National University community. He highlighted that the programme not only teaches technical skills but also imparts valuable life lessons, such as staying calm in challenging situations and embracing a mindset of continuous improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher, noted that this initiative marks a significant step for the University in enhancing the diversity of educational opportunities for students. He reassured that experienced instructors would lead students through rigorous training, fostering essential skills and confidence.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, pointed out that in a world filled with complexities, the values and skills derived from Martial Arts are increasingly pertinent. He described the six-week course as designed to cultivate participants’ overall well-being, anxiety management, and composure during tough situations, promoting humility and a positive mindset.

Captain Tevita Korovou, who comes from a military background, will serve as the instructor for the programme.
