Unlock Your Potential: Fiji National University Launches Exciting Martial Arts Programme

Captain Tevita Korovou, a former bodyguard for the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is now the programme instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus.

The newly launched Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with a solid understanding and practical skills across various martial arts disciplines. Training will include Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The programme’s holistic approach is designed to improve physical fitness, mental well-being, spiritual growth, and self-defense skills.

During the launch, Professor Govinda Lingam, a Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extend beyond physical activity; they represent a path of personal transformation. He noted, “We are opening the doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth. Martial arts is for everyone— regardless of age, background, or physical ability.”

Professor Lingam expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and encouraging environment for students, allowing them to learn at their own pace while embracing the values of respect and growth at Fiji National University. He added that the programme will not only teach technical skills but will also impart valuable life lessons, emphasizing the mindset of continuous self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean Learning and Teacher at the College of Humanities and Education, described this initiative as a key achievement in the university’s dedication to offering diverse educational opportunities that align with the interests of students. He stated that the six-week course will give students a thorough understanding of various martial arts techniques, under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, highlighted the relevance of martial arts skills and values in today’s society, highlighting the certificate programme’s objective to enhance participants’ overall well-being.

Singh explained, “Martial arts is not only about attacking and defending; it also changes how individuals think. It teaches people to manage difficult situations and maintain composure, fostering humility.”
