Unlock Your Potential: Dive into Fiji’s New Martial Arts Programme!

Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, has taken on the role of program instructor for the newly launched Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus. Korovou is also a former head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

This Certificate Programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in a variety of martial arts disciplines, including Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The initiative aims to promote a holistic approach to martial arts, enhancing physical fitness, self-defense skills, and mental and spiritual well-being among participants.

During the program launch, Professor Govinda Lingam, Chief Guest and a Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized the transformative power of martial arts, stating that it offers more than just physical training. He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and supportive environment for students to learn at their own pace while valuing mutual respect and personal growth.

Lingam noted that martial arts fosters important life lessons, teaching individuals to remain calm amid adversity, overcome challenges, and pursue continuous self-improvement regardless of age, background, or physical ability.

Dr. Victor Alasa, CHE Associate Dean Learning and Teacher, described the program as a significant milestone in the university’s dedication to offering diverse educational opportunities. He encouraged students to enroll, highlighting the rigorous training led by experienced instructors to develop necessary skills and confidence.

Suraj Singh, Head of Department for Secondary and Sports Education, pointed out that the values and skills gained from martial arts are especially relevant in today’s complex society. He emphasized that this six-week course is intended to build participants’ physical fitness, self-defense capabilities, and overall well-being, highlighting how martial arts can also transform one’s mindset and approach to life’s challenges.
