Unleashing the Power of Martial Arts: Fiji National University Introduces New Program

Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the new Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus.

Having previously served as the head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Captain Korovou is leading this recently launched Certificate Programme aimed at providing participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines. The program includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. Its goal is to promote a well-rounded approach to martial arts, enhancing participants’ physical fitness, mental strength, spiritual growth, and self-defense abilities.

In his remarks, Chief Guest Professor Govinda Lingam, an educator in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extends beyond mere physical activity; it is a path to personal transformation. He noted, “We are not just launching a programme, but we are opening the doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.” Lingam stressed that martial arts is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or physical capabilities. He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to provide a safe and encouraging atmosphere for students, where they can learn at their own pace and embrace the university’s values of respect and growth.

Lingam further highlighted that the programme not only teaches technical skills but also imparts valuable life lessons, including how to remain composed under pressure, tackle challenges with determination, and develop a mindset centered on continuous self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching in the College of Humanities, commented on the significance of this initiative as a testament to the university’s dedication to offering diverse educational opportunities that align with students’ interests. He noted, “This short course programme will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various martial arts techniques, guided by our experienced instructors to help them build essential skills and confidence.”

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department for Secondary and Sports Education, remarked on the growing relevance of martial arts in a society confronting complex challenges.

The six-week course is designed to equip participants with both knowledge and practical skills in various martial arts, fostering a holistic training approach to improve physical fitness, self-defense capabilities, and overall well-being. Singh also pointed out that martial arts not only emphasize combat skills but also encourage a change in mindset, teaching individuals how to maintain composure in difficult situations, which fosters humility.
