The former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Captain Tevita Korovou, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus. Captain Korovou, who previously served as the head of martial arts in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), is set to lead this newly launched Certificate Programme designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines.
The programme includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The initiative aims to promote a holistic approach to martial arts by enhancing participants’ physical fitness, mental and spiritual well-being, and self-defence skills.
Professor Govinda Lingam, the chief guest and a professor in teacher education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts go beyond being just a physical activity; they represent a path of personal transformation. He remarked, “We are not just launching a programme; we are opening doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.” He highlighted that martial arts is inclusive and beneficial for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and physical abilities.
Professor Lingam expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to foster a secure and supportive learning environment, allowing students to progress at their own pace and feel empowered as part of a community that values respect and growth. He also noted that the programme not only imparts technical skills but also essential life lessons, teaching individuals how to stay composed during adversity and pursue continuous self-improvement.
Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching at the College of Humanities and Education, described the programme as a significant step towards expanding the university’s educational offerings to meet the diverse interests of students. He stated, “This short course programme will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various martial arts techniques,” and encouraged students to register for this engaging opportunity.
Suraj Singh, head of the Secondary and Sports Education department, pointed out that the relevance of the values and skills learned through martial arts is increasing in today’s complex society. He added that the six-week course is designed not only to cultivate physical fitness and self-defence capabilities but also to enhance overall well-being, urging participants to embrace the humility instilled by the discipline of martial arts.
