Unleash Your Potential: New Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University

The former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Captain Tevita Korovou, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus. Korovou, who previously served as the head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), will lead the newly launched Certificate Programme designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills across various martial arts disciplines.

The programme includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. It aims to promote a holistic approach to martial arts, helping participants improve their physical fitness, mental acuity, spiritual growth, and self-defence skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, the Chief Guest and a Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extends beyond mere physical activity, representing a journey of personal development. He noted, “We are not just launching a programme, but we are opening the doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.” Lingam asserted that martial arts is inclusive, welcoming individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and physical capabilities.

He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou’s ability to create a safe and supportive environment where students could learn at their own pace while fostering mutual respect and growth. Lingam highlighted that the programme encompasses not only technical skills but also valuable life lessons, teaching participants to maintain composure in adversity and cultivate a mindset focused on continuous improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching in the College of Humanities and Education, remarked that the initiative represents a significant advancement in the university’s commitment to offering diverse educational opportunities tailored to student interests. He added that the short course would deliver a thorough understanding of various martial arts techniques, facilitated by experienced instructors dedicated to building students’ skills and confidence. Alasa encouraged all students to consider enrolling in this engaging programme.

Suraj Singh, HEAD of the Secondary and Sports Education Department, noted that as society faces increasingly complex challenges, the values and skills imparted by martial arts are especially pertinent today. He described the six-week short course as designed to promote physical fitness, self-defence, and overall well-being. Singh pointed out that martial arts not only focus on offensive and defensive techniques but also foster a mindset of composure and humility in challenging situations.
