Unleash Your Potential: New Martial Arts Program at Fiji National University!

Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and ex-head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the newly launched Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus.

The purpose of this Certificate Programme is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills in various martial arts disciplines. The curriculum includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. It aims to promote a holistic approach to martial arts, enhancing physical fitness, mental strength, spiritual development, and self-defence capabilities.

Professor Govinda Lingam, Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extend beyond physical activity, serving as a powerful tool for personal transformation. He remarked that this programme offers opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth, encouraging inclusivity regardless of age, background, or physical ability.

Lingam expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would create a safe and supportive environment for students to learn at their own pace, fostering a culture of empowerment and mutual respect. He pointed out that the programme not only teaches technical skills but also imparts valuable life lessons that promote calmness in adversity and the determination to overcome challenges.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher, highlighted that this initiative reflects the university’s commitment to broadening educational opportunities that align with student interests. He noted that the short course would enable students to gain thorough insights into various martial arts techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, remarked on the importance of martial arts in today’s complex society, emphasizing that the values and skills learned are particularly relevant now.

The six-week course is designed to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical proficiency, emphasizing physical fitness, self-defence, and overall well-being. Singh added that martial arts not only teach combat techniques but also encourage individuals to maintain composure during challenging times and develop humility.
