The University of Fiji is embarking on an ambitious and innovative journey for 2025, placing a strong emphasis on offering distinct iTaukei academic programs. To celebrate and preserve the rich iTaukei culture, the university’s Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS) is notable as the only dedicated center of its kind in Fiji.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the center’s vital role in providing specialized education in iTaukei culture, highlighting the importance of indigenous knowledge in academic discourse. According to Professor Shameem, “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center specifically for iTaukei studies, which encompasses culture, language, performance, art, and craft.”
In a groundbreaking initiative, the university intends to broaden the center’s educational outreach to Levuka, where traditional chiefs will be appointed as adjunct professors. This initiative aims to directly engage the local population, as these elders will impart valuable knowledge about their cultural heritage, language, performance, and history.
Additionally, the university is advancing its science and technology education, focusing on cutting-edge fields such as robotics. Professor Shameem noted the necessity of addressing contemporary topics, including artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, stating the importance of understanding AI’s capabilities, constraints, societal roles, and associated risks.
Emphasizing student well-being and success, Professor Shameem reinforced the university’s commitment to innovation. “Everything that the University of Fiji will be doing in 2025 will be new and innovative. We will not be repeating anything that other institutions are doing. To be future-ready, the University of Fiji aims to stay ahead of the game,” she asserted.
The University of Fiji’s vision for 2025 encompasses unique academic offerings, cultural conservation, and technological advancement, positioning it as a leader in higher education in Fiji and beyond.
This forward-thinking approach not only reinforces the significance of cultural education but also encourages technological development, which is essential for preparing students to thrive in an increasingly complex global landscape. By merging tradition with innovation, the University of Fiji is setting an inspiring example in higher education.
