The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition is set to be more than just a sporting event. This sentiment was expressed by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch held yesterday at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva.
This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted the challenge from Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the responsibilities of the respective forces in contributing to a better Fiji.
“It’s more than about winning or losing; it’s about the spirit within our forces, who we are, what we represent, and what we can achieve for the future of this country,” Kalouniwai stated. He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has embarked on a reconciliation journey, seeking a new direction while acknowledging the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing battle against drug-related issues affecting communities.
Chew pointed out that the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is Nasova, stating, “The Fiji Police Force is ready and eager to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa.” He mentioned the need for vigilance, hinting at potential strategies involved in this rivalry.
Last year, the police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a dramatic draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Chew emphasized the importance of addressing rising social issues, advocating for a stand against drugs.
Salman Khan, chief commercial officer of Vodafone Fiji, remarked on Fiji’s passion for rugby and highlighted that the competition is a showcase of the disciplined forces contending not just for victory but for a trophy that represents camaraderie and spirited rivalry. He encouraged players to compete with integrity and pride, bearing the legacy of past champions and hopes of future generations.
The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, along with other sports events scheduled for the same week.
