Unity Over Fear: Rabuka’s Bold Promise for Fiji’s Future

Politics has often been a tool for dividing Fiji’s two main ethnic groups by perpetuating negative stereotypes and fostering a “fear of one another.” Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this assertion while assuring the Indo-Fijian community that they have no reason to be afraid.

During his address at the National Federation Party (NFP) annual convention in Sigatoka, he emphasized that despite historical attempts to segregate the communities by colonial rulers, both groups have coexisted peacefully with other ethnicities in Fiji.

Rabuka pointed out that peace has always been within reach, but politics has historically been misused to disrupt that peace through fear and stereotyping. He noted that this narrative was especially prevalent in the lead-up to the 2022 General Election, where he faced significant criticism and was even labeled a “snake.”

He urged unity for Fiji’s future, stating, “Trust me when I say we are here together for Fiji’s future. We are rebuilding Fiji’s future together and united as a three-party coalition government, and potentially including remnants from other parties.”

Rabuka also expressed optimism about the electoral landscape changing by the time the People’s Coalition Government approaches the next elections, highlighting that “peace begins with us.” Additionally, he commended the NFP for its unwavering contributions to the nation’s development.
